Safety Tips While Traveling Abroad

Days of summer are drawing to a close and fall's shadow is mere weeks away. If you are planning a cruise vacation abroad this fall, the following tips will prove helpful when your 'Floating Resort' pulls into ports:

Avoid looking like a tourist by dressing conservatively and being inconspicuous with your camera and map. Leave your expensive jewelry in the safe located in your ship stateroom/cabin -- or better yet, at home. An affluent appearance makes you a more attractive target for thieves.

Carry your valuables in concealed inside pockets or in a sturdy bag that closes securely and has a strap across your chest. Handbags, outside pockets, open shoulder bags, and fanny packs are all easy prey for pickpockets and thieves.

For all the questions you always wanted to ask about cruise vacations and were afraid to as, buy a copy of "Cruise Vacations For Dummies", and while you're at it, buy a copy of "Europe For Dummies".

'Yearning for Alaska during these 'Dog' Days of summer

If these dog days of summer have you yearning for a cruise vacation where summer temperatures are cool, then Alaska is the derstination. The Alaska cruise season lasts from May through September, and the cruises are seven to 12 days in length. Alaska experiences long hours of daylight during summer, lasting up to 23 hours a day in June.

Generally, Alaskan cruises are divided into two types: Inside Passage cruises and Gulf of Alaska cruises. The Inside Passage has been the traditional way to cruise Alaska. This 1,000-mile long seaway is a photographer's paradise. Calm, rotected waters lay host to sea lions,m sea otters and migrating whales, and beaches and coves provide sanctuaries for moose, deer and bears. Bald eagles soar the skies overhead. Gulf of Alaska cruises cover more territory as they travel from Vancouver through the Inside Passage and up to Seward/Anchorage (or the reverse). Airfare for a Gulf of Alaska cruise is generally more expensive because Anchorage is so far north.

Today's tip: Because in most cases you'll need to fly a long distance to reach your port of departure, I suggest that you arrive at the port city at least one or two days in advance of your cruise. This will give yhou time to rest and get oriented before boarding the ship. Most cruise lines offer pre-cruise hotel packages.

My tip today is directed to first-time cruisers:

When packing for your cruise vacation, pack a small carry-on bag with your travel documents; a change of street clothes, including leisure wear; bathing suit; and any medications and toiletries you may need. This will allow you to begin enjoying your cruise vacation immediately, because you won't have to wait for your bags to arrive at your ship stateroom. I hope your cruise experience prove to be perfect for you.
